Ooki Na Furudokei [My Grandfather's Clock] ~LYRICS~

2 comments Post a Comment

I am terribly slow when it comes to music that Masha has sung, more so with other people's music. He often sings other musician's song and I just found this song called Ooki Na Furudokei or Big Grandfather's Clock, originally sung by Ken Hirai. Masha covered this song in ANN show on 26.10.2002, which is a pretty old ANN request song. Masha sang it with a deep baritone whilst the original version, a tad slower was sung with higher pitched, soprano is that what they call such sound? Both beautifully sung, probably because the music itself is beautiful and reading the lyrics, a bit childlike whimsical. Wholesome lyrics unless there is a deep undertone to it. I hope when you listen to this Masha version as above, the video is still available as the uploader has previously made this lovely song a private video. What a pity that would have been! Anyway Kanji title is 大きな古時計. Interestingly a fact from Mognet, this is "This is Hirai Ken's version of the Japanese version of an English folk song called "Grandfather's Clock"".In fact the lyrics is terribly similar. Music is the same. The original composer was Henry Clay Work in 1876.

You can't find this song in any of Masha's albums since it was sung during ANN request show.

By the way this is the guy rumoured, and I say it very lightly, to be Masha's one time lover. How this came about I do not know but like every rumour of Masha, let's just say I put this as "highly impossible but if true, good choice" since you know Ken Hirai is a good looking man.

KANJI VERSION

ooh grandfather's clock tick-tock tick-tock
ooh grandfather's clock tick-tock tick-tock

ENGLISH VERSION
My grandfather's clock
Was a big and tall old clock
For one hundred years it always rang
A clock you could boast about
It was bought
On the morning that my grandfather was born
Now, that clock no longer rings

For one hundred years, without a break
Tick tock, tick tock
Just like my grandfather
Tick tock, tick tock
Now, that clock no longer rings

That old clock knows everything
My grandfather's clock
Rang on the day
That he got a beautiful bride
During the happy times and the sad times
Everyone knew that clock
Now, that clock no longer rings

During the happy times and the sad times
Everyone knew that clock
Now, that clock no longer rings

At midnight
My grandfather's clock rang
The time to say farewell had come
It told everyone
Rising to heaven, my grandfather
Said farewell to the clock
Now, that clock no longer rings

For one hundred years, without a break
Tick tock, tick tock
Just like my grandfather
Tick tock, tick tock
Now, that clock no longer rings
Now, that clock no longer rings

THE ORIGINAL VERSION
As in Johnny Cash version as the original version was in 1876 by Henry Clay Work [Source]. Johnny Cash version tweaked the lyrics a bit.

THE ORIGINAL LYRICS
As by Henry Clay Work

My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn
Of the day that he was born,
And was always his treasure and pride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS:
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
In watching its pendulum
Swing to and fro,
Many hours had he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood
The clock seemed to know,
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty-four
When he entered at the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS
My grandfather said
That of those he could hire,
Not a servant so faithful he found;
For it wasted no time,
And had but one desire,
At the close of each week to be wound.
And it kept in its place,
Not a frown upon its face,
And its hand never hung by its side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS

It rang an alarm
In the dead of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit
Was pluming for flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a soft and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS

I learned this as a little kid with lyrics similar to Henry Clay Work's you have listed. A few words changed like most folk songs. It has stayed with me a long time. I have heard it in korean too. I found this blog because I instantly rec KH's version and wanted to see how his translated.
