NOTE
Anyone watching in World Premium version, the title of this series is Life Force. Over at ASTRO, you won't see the title but just the words "Special Programme". This is the one, confirmed showing.
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS
NHK Special
"Life Force" Prologue
Jan 10 (Mon) 6.30pm-7.43pm (Msia time)
Introducing NHK Special "Life Force," a documentary series focusing on "biodiversity hotspots" which is a place that accounts for just 3% of all the land on Earth, where 75% of the mammals, birds, and amphibians that currently face extinction are found. Masaharu Fukuyama, the navigator of the program, introduces the highlights and behind-the-scenes of the program.
COMMENTS
I shall be honest.
Right now I am just... you know NHK, thank you... for not bothering about everybody else. They had all the time in the world to give us subtitles and they chose not to. And if this program is intended for international viewing, clearly NHK doesn't give a damn about us.
The only consolation is seeing Masha doing all sorts of stuff that scares the hell out of me, and also watching him doing that sound when that what was it? Chameleon walked pass his arm like a bridge to the branch next to him was awesome.
Beautifully shot, Masha was super cute and super annoying, to the animals. The way he harassed them, I was so worried one of them will bite him or fly into his mouth. Masha, stop imitating what is probably the mating call with the lemur (lemurs right?) and that kissy kissy sound. So worried the lemur would just fly straight to him and there goes our Masha, married to a Lemur.
I was also at part bored to death, not by what I see but by the boring monotonous narration by the lady narrator (thanks to Xiaoxin who says the narrator is OTANUKI KAORU (Tomi san). Isn't Masha the narrator? Let him narrate! If not for him, I find this prologue rather tedious at part. It is nothing new to any documentary watcher, but it packages the whole thing in a pretty package. I did worry for Masha but then I realise every animal or insect he approached was harmless. They wouldn't let him near something dangerous. THe anthill being the main attraction was very beautiful and yes I did worry he might destroy's people's condo but the condo as he demonstrated was rock hard. I also worried he may so disturb the muscled looking worker ants with their work they might just drop the leaves and attack him. HE WAS THAT CLOSE.
And by the way, no wonder he had food poisoning. To eat off the fruit or whatever in a road side stall just like that!
RATINGS REPORT
From HKFC
A decent 10.6% since you know, it is a documentary and it is a prologue. I wonder how normally documentary fares in terms of ratings in Japan? Is Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, National Geographic and Sir David Attenborough big over there?
AVI format, 720X480 only, huge file, more than 1.8GB, RAW version

OLD NEWS/COMMENTS
My schedule and NHK schedule says on
10.01.2011 at 7.30pm Japan time (which is 6.30pm Malaysia time) there will be a prologue to Hotspots : Saigo no Rakuen. This will be on NHK channel. Now problem is will there be a different version or at least English narrated version for the international version. That I do not know. But NHK World Premium will show this and for Malaysia it will be Ch 398 over at ASTRO. For Keyhole TV viewers, it will definitely be Japanese version. The password remains the same as far as I know.
Meanwhile, the
video preview can be seen here, the Japanese synopsis can be
read here and English synopsis for the renamed show now called Life Force can't be found but I remember seeing a notice in English that there is such a prologue which you can
see at the bottom right here. Why the discrepancies I do not know. In fact the change of title took everyone by surprise. In fact of all facts for the English and French versions, it would seem the show presents itself and that cute Japanese dude the camera is focusing on is just some guy who does not need any proper introduction or worthy of a short profile in the official website because if it is there, I can't see it.
Anyway some screencaps from that preview of the prologue. There will be better and clearer one if I get my hands on a better and clearer copy of the eventual broadcast.
